Oil Spill Jobs Lies And The (Supposed) Dissapearing Gulf Oil Slick

South Pass, mouth of Mississippi River flowing into Gulf of Mexico - Still finding oil there - Still oil spill jobs there Photo Credit: Washington Post
You’ve probably been hearing just like I have all week long about “how the oil slick in Gulf of Mexico is mysteriously vanishing.”
Well, I’m here to inform you that the BP oil spill problem is Faaaaar From Gone, and the Gulf oil spill jobs are Here To Stay!
Let’s break it down:
Oil Spill Jobs To Stay Because Spilled — BP Crude Is Still Here – All Over The Place…
Earlier this week you read headlines talking about how microbes – bacteria – in the Gulf of Mexico waters have been devouring the oil from the BP leak like mad. And now that the busted well has had its temporary cap since July 15th, the oil-loving bugs have had a chance to eat it all up without dealing with more and more leaked oil from the uncontrolled gusher a mile below the water’s surface. Because of this, the oil is disappearing much faster than expected and it’s just like magic.
Well, here’s what’s true about what I just quoted. The Gulf of Mexico is full of bacteria that eat oil. Scientists say that the Gulf of Mexico has natural oil seepage coming straight from the bottom of the ocean all over the place. They say that it’s been doing this for thousands of years and it continues today. And this oil seepage is not related whatsoever to oil drilling that has gone on in the Gulf for the past 50 years or so. So, yes, the microbes are out there consuming the oil.
What’s not true is that “the oil is gone!”
Oil Spill Jobs Safety Information
No doubt about it: oil spill jobs are an absolute blessing for a lot of people around the Gulf of Mexico these days. You can’t complain about good, steady oil work with good, admirable oil work benefits.
To give you an idea of how big the oil recovery operation has gotten (thus how many oil spill jobs have been created), look at these current, ultra short statistics on the oil spill recovery from Saturday, July 17, 2010:
- Total response vessels: over 6490 active (boats, ships, barges)
- Total aircraft: at least 115
- Total oil booms deployed: over 3,400,000 feet (That’s 640 miles for the Gulf oil spill!)
- Total “oil-water” recovered: approx. 34 million US gal
- Estimated total oil burned: approx. 11 million US gal
- Total active workers attending to BP oil spill: over 41,000 people
That’s right: There are over 41,000 oil spill jobs that are currently being filled in the Gulf of Mexico, on land, at sea, underwater, flying above the Gulf…they’re everywhere.
The good thing for you is that this still in NOT enough people to effectively clean the leaked oil from the Gulf waters and from its beaches and coastal areas.
Impressive as the above figures are, with thousands (maybe millions) of gallons of oil removed from the ocean and land that would otherwise have caused problems for many years, there’s so much crude that’s been released that most of it remains. It’s there waiting for the next wave of oil spill job personnel to come in and save the day. But if you want to be counted in their numbers, there’s a way you can get a head start on what you’ll HAVE to know.
Oil Spill Job Safety Info — Straight From The Federal Government
Crude oil is toxic. Even when it’s weather-worn from many days of exposure, it’s still toxic.
Oil slicks on the water = toxic.
Tar balls = toxic.
Used oil absorbent materials = toxic.
Sand and oil mixed on the beach = toxic.
Smoke from burning it off the surface of the Gulf = toxic.
So, what do you do? How do you safely handle oil? How do you make sure that you’re doing it right so you never get sick from improperly working with the oil leaked from the Deepwater Horizon’s busted well head?
The US government has already answered the questions for you. OSHA, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration gov’t agency, has a web portal dealing specifically with your short-term and long-term safety when working any oil spill job that requires that you be anywhere near the actual crude.
A lot of people are deciding to make a career out of fighting the BP oil spill instead of just doing some temporary work then moving on to something else. If this is your plan, then making sure you work your oil spill job with safety in mind HAS to be your number 1 priority. If you get careless, and get sick, well…the career hopes might be gone forever. (And let me tell you, a disability check won’t equal what you make working a regular job. It never will.)
So if you’re inclined, take a look at OSHA’s special page (created by OSHA and the CDC jointly) (http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/topics/oilspillresponse/protecting/) dealing with oil spill safety and start your journey to oil spill job paradise on the right foot. —OR wait for the class paid for by your new oil spill job employer.
